Priorities

Student Mental Health

A report by the Children’s Hospital Association in 2023 noted that approximately 2 million adolescents attempt suicide each year. Among U.S. pediatric deaths, more than 25% are by suicide. It is the second leading cause of death for children and young adults ages 10 to 24, causing more death than any single major illness and second only to unintentional injuries.

In early 2023 ASD had a series of ‘community conversations’ – designed to be a strategic planning session for the future of the district. A prevalent theme was recognizing the importance of mental health resources for students, and improving upon the availability of resources and identifying students at risk. This work, which was already underway, is important to ensure that students in crisis are identified early, and resources are readily available for students and family in need of mental health assistance. Also, fewer disruptions in the classroom means a better learning environment for all students. As a Board member, I will prioritize this important work to support students' mental well-being and emotional health.

Fiscal Responsibility

I have worked hard as a Trustee of the Brown County Library Board, and as three years as President, to ensure that public funds are responsibly spent. This includes more than $6 million to establish the new East Branch library, and commit funds for the new Ashwaubenon Branch. As a business owner, I appreciate the responsibility of employing people while keeping a sharp eye on costs. I appreciate the legal and administrative complexities of public school financing, and have committed to learning more by meeting with our Assistant Superintendent of Schools to thoroughly understand the financial landscape of ASD.

One of the most important functions of School Boards is to approve our school budget. While we want to provide every opportunity possible, that is not always possible. By relying on our district expertise and asking probing questions, I will ensure that our finances are committed strategically and responsibly. The district has done well to plan for capital improvements over a period of years, instead of calling for referendums when buildings need routine improvements or for long-range expected expenses. I will continue to support this planning so there is more stability with our financial expenditures.

Academics and Life Preparedness

Ensuring academic success for all learners is critically important for the success of ASD. Whether preparedness for college or life after school, students rely on the foundational education experience that they receive in our schools. This is especially important as our older students are becoming more sophisticated decisionmakers when it comes to life after high school. Students may choose higher education, but should also have the ability to develop skills and find pathways to enter the workforce and build a career after graduation. Academic excellence is also important so employers know our students are graduating with the knowledge and skills that will create responsible and capable young adults – and prospective employees.

Supporting Athletics and Extra-Curricular Activities

Part of student learning includes extra-curricular activities like athletics, music, theatre, etc. This helps create well-rounded students with learning that can only take place outside of the classroom. ASD offers great diversity in activities and organizations for students to choose from, from elementary schools through high school. I will support efforts to sustain and grow these opportunities for our students, as an essential part of the school experience.
